As every passing day reveals more of the belligerent imbecile currently disgracing our White House, we see how America must become a place where it is easier to be a good person, where living improves as virtue abounds.
This culture's aggression toward morality, its dismissal of compassion, remains the obstacle to any restoration of decency. A nation this confused about right and wrong, justice and injustice, will find itself sliding from one moral oblivion to the next. People with no firm ground beneath their feet have no God. Politicians protest their love of Jesus reflexively while strangling the poor, abandoning the sick, and sending immigrants to die in concentration camps. Hence, their pieties are nauseating to God. The elements of evil are arrogance, resentment, and deceit, all incarnate in MAGA.
A poor man will steal and lie from desperation, a billionaire from force of habit and boredom. Families constantly defrauded of basic needs by this corrupt system reply daily with poisonous nihilism, cynicism, and developed patterns of passive violence toward the order. People repressed, reduced, and kept afraid are prone to acts of rage. In our own community are companies that strategically choose only employees who will accept indignity and abuse out of fear to do otherwise.
Our next great wave of renewal will come on a surge of compassion, generosity, love, patience, discipline, gentleness, forgiveness, empathy, and friendship; not technology, not innovation, certainly not politics. The progress we so desperately need will be the product of human kindness overflowing.
